The author's first work. Virgil Markham (1899-1973) was the son of well-known poet Edwin Markham. After traveling around Europe for half of 1925, he published this picaresque historical novel, "The Scamp", which was set in Europe. The story follows Francis Talbot and his friends during the reign of King George I of Great Britain (early 18th century). He would use European settings as well as several other mystery novels set in Europe.
