An important Association copy. Eric Barker was a poet associated with the Big Sur literary and artistic community during the time Miller lived and became a central figure there, attracting other writers and artists.Miller praised Barker's poetry.in his memoir 'Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch.' Further, Henry Miller wrote the preface for Barker's 1961 poetry collection 'A Ring of Willows' (also published by New Directions) and also contributed liner notes to a recording of Barker's poetry (Big Sur and Other Poems). Additional works like Barker's In Easy Dark (1958) list Miller as a contributor. The fact that book designer Merle Armitage designed and published Barker's 1956 poetry collection 'Directions in the Sun' as well as Miller's' The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder' underscore the close connection between Miller and Barker.
