Laid in is typed 8-line poem SIGNED by the author. Gaines was an early 20th-century American educator and author of the 1910 book 'Pathway to Western Literature', a collection or anthology of Western (primarily California-focused) literature. Her son, Frank S. Gaines (1890–1977) was Mayor of Berkeley from 1939 to 1943. She wrote this book of poems at the age of 83, living on Hawthorne Terrace in Berkeley.
