Following on a previous work in which James shared house blessings conducted by the Navaho Indians of Arizona and New Mexico, in this work, he creates similar ceremonies for friends in their own housewarmings. He tells how he introduced the ceremony in lectures at the Panama-Californa International Exposition, noting among those in attendance: mark Twain, Bret Harte, Ina Coolbrith, Joaquin Miller, George Sterling, and others in the contemporary literary world.
