An important early wordless graphic narrative by the Belgian artist Frans Masereel (1889–1972), consisting of 25 stark expressionist woodcuts depicting the suffering, alienation, struggle, and eventual spiritual transformation of a modern working-class man. The present third Volksausgabe was printed in Munich in 1928 from galvanos (electrotype reproductions) rather than the original woodblocks.
