Seger (1896–1967) was a German Social Democratic politician and journalist who was a member of the German Reichstag in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Parliaments. After Hitler came to power in January 1933, Seger was arrested and held without charge. He was transferred to Oranienburg concentration camp, where he remained from June until December 1933, when he escaped across the German-Czechoslovak border. In this book he writes his account of his Oranienburg imprisonment, providing American readers with a firsthand account of political imprisonment, brutality, intimidation, and the systematic suppression of political opposition.
