Nantucket Scraps: Being the Experiences of an Off-Islander, in Season and Out of Season, Among a Passing People (association copy with three original photographs)

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First Edition. Small 8vo. 354 pp. An unusual association copy containing three original photographs of “Eloise,” two dated 1900 and one dated 1891, affixed to the preliminary leaves. Beneath the 1891 photograph is a contemporary manuscript provenance note: “Eloise was a relative of Warren Baldwin, Santa Cruz. When he read this book he gave me the pictures to go with it. V. W.” The two photographs dated 1900 show Eloise standing in two different street scenes of houses; the 1891 photo shows Eloise standing next to a small boat by the water. Brown pictorial cloth with dark design and gilt lettering & design. A good copy with wear to extremities; slight spine cocking; old tape & tape ghosts with the photographs. Item #23499

A charming account of Nantucket life, customs, personalities, and social character, written from the perspective of an “off-islander.” Austin combines personal observations, anecdotes, local history, and sketches of Nantucket people and traditions, capturing the island as a distinctive community increasingly transformed by seasonal visitors.
