Cannon (1890–1974) was a founding leader of the American Communist movement, later a central figure in the founding and leadership of the Socialist Workers Party. His writings became foundational texts for American Trotskyism. In this work, Cannon defends the Socialist Workers Party’s revolutionary program during the bitter 1939–40 factional struggle that led to the split with Max Shachtman and James Burnham and the formation of the Workers Party. It became one of the foundational texts of the American Trotskyist movement and remains an essential source for understanding the development of revolutionary socialist organizations in the United States.
