Jo Mora's scarce first map was commissioned by the Del Monte Co. in 1926 to advertise its' holdings and points of interest on the Montery Peninsula, including the newly constructed Del Monte Hotel built on the ashes of the fire of 1924. As with all Jo Mora cartes, it is packed with historical information and details, creatively and colorfully illustrated (albeit now faded). (Grandeau-Shorts Cartes 9a; Gilmore M15). Joseph Jacinto Mora (1876 – 1947) was a Uruguayan-born American cartoonist, comics artist, illustrator and cowboy, who lived with the Hopi and wrote extensively about his experiences in California. He was an artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. He has been called the "Renaissance Man of the West"
