Yosemite (Carte/Map)

Monterey, CA: Del Monte Property Co., 1949. Second color printing. Color pictographic map. Image size 17 3/4" x 13 7/8". This carte is in fine condition; the colors are bright and strong. Item #23553

Jo Mora's first Yosemite carte was black and white and not well received. The Curry Company asked Jo to color it in for reprinting. They then produced the first of two smaller maps in color - this carte being from the second printing in color. The carte was updated with several changes requiring the services of another artist, because Jo had died in 1947. The major change was to delete the Coulterville Road which meant changing the whole lower left of the map. The original hand colored map created by Jo can be seen at the Yosemite Museum. As with all his cartes, this one is filled with Mora’s characteristic humor and imaginative vignettes, the map combines cartographic information with an engaging visual portrait of one of California’s most celebrated national parks. (Gilmore M9A). Joseph Jacinto Mora (1876 – 1947) was a Uruguayan-born American cartoonist, comics artist, illustrator and cowboy, who lived with the Hopi and wrote extensively about his experiences in California.
