Kurt Seligmann (1900 - 1962) was an Swiss-American artist associated with Surrealism. He specialized in painting and engraving, often depicting medieval troubadours and knights in macabre rituals. His fascination with magical traditions compelled him to write this important work on the history of magic and occult traditions in the Western world, tracing their development from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia through medieval Europe and the eighteenth century. Explores witchcraft, sorcery, alchemy, astrology, divination, demonology, Kabbalah, Hermeticism, and ceremonial magic, examining the relationship between magical beliefs, religion, science, and superstition.
