Yosemite (Carte/Map)
Carmel, CA: The Jo Mora Maps, 1941. First color printing. Color pictographic map. Image size 17 3/4" x 13 7/8". Mounted on linen. A fine, bright copy (faint foldline in upper center border) of the scarce first color printing. Item #23582
Jo Mora's first Yosemite carte was black and white. The Curry Company asked Jo to color it in for reprinting. They then produced the first of two smaller maps in color - this carte being from the first printing in color. The original hand colored map done by Jo can be seen at the Yosemite Museum. As with all his cartes, this one is packed with historical information and details, creatively and colorfully illustrated. Dedicated to Jo Mora's friend Stephen Mather, the industrialist and conservationist who became the first director of the National Park Service (an organization he rallied to create), the map depicts the majestic sweep of Yosemite National Park and is filled with light-hearted illustrations and visual puns. (Grandeau & Shorts Cartes 5b; Gilmore M9).
