Mr. Rister tells the story of 'the land of trail herds up from Texas, of home made law and order, and of dust storms and grasshopper plagues, a land which is symbolized by the barbed wire fence, the adobe and sod house, rather than the cabin and split rail fence of older frontiers.' In a chapter entiitled "Frontier Justice" Mr. Rister gives a general picture of lawlessness in the early-day Southwest. (Six-Guns 1864; Herd 1908; Howes R317).
