The story of the Russ Building is the story of San Francisco. Named for the Russ brothers, early settlers of San Francisco, it was initially built as their two-story home and eventually grew into the grand three-story hotel: the Russ House. The hotel survived the 1906 earthquake only to be destroyed by the fire that followed. An even larger building, the Russ Building was built within the year, only to be considered too small for the booming city within the next decade. Thus, the dream to build a new, "elegant, exquisite landmark" embarked upon, led by architect George Kelman. The building opened September, 1927 and stands to this day at the corner of Montgomery and Pine. It's a great story.
