A Log of the Spanish Main: A Jo Mora Diary

San Francisco: Jo Mora, Jr., 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. Unpaginated. Original tan cloth with black lettering and green, red and black illustration of a pirate on the front cover. A unique copy in that it was used by it's owner to record her travels on the Santa Paula Graceline cruiseship saling from San Francisco on February 8, 1935 to New York. The owner recorded her experiences during the cruise and the cities visited along the way. " Woke in the morning to see large rocks and orange lights of city. At noon, old launches and other crafts came with wooden baskets containing bass, ducks and melons." Along the way, the owner pasted in unused postage stamps from the various cities visited as well as business cards, tour tickets, and menus. From newspaper clippings, it appears that Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt boarded the cruise ship in Guatemala and returned to New York. Minor wear to extremities; general soiling else very good plus. "Copies of this book containing journal entries should be considered very rare!" - Grandeau & Shorts pg. 16. Item #8706

The first book written and illustrated by Jo Mora with his unique drawings throughout, including maps of the cities to be visited. Designed to be used by passengers on board Grace Line ships during cruises, the entire edition was purchased by the line. (Grandeau & Shorts B10).
